Photographers: I use an old fujifilm X-T1 (future post) for my studio work. This shot was taken using the 35mm f/2 prime lens with a variable ND filter to help mitigate some of the ambient light. Key light is 47” neewer octa with diffusion. Hair light is 45x45 aputure modifier with grid. 2 - TT600 Godox Speedlights.
Being part of the high school sports realm has its perks. Letterman Jackets are part of those perks if the student has put in the time and effort. There is general criteria for receiving a letterman jacket and the criteria is specific from sport to sport. I didn’t grow up thinking that letterman jackets were something to be celebrated. I never understood why having a letterman jacket was so special or “cool.” Now that I am a little older, I can understand how the letterman jacket can symbolize success, hardwork, and determination. We have specific criteria for a student to receive a letterman jacket. The criteria is definitely not extensive. But, it still requires time and effort.
Photographers: Key light - Controlled lighting with the 45x45 aputure modifier with the grid camera right. 2nd flash behind subject with purple gel. 2 - TT600 Godox speed lights.
For the past few years, I have tried to make getting a letterman jacket a big deal. I have done special letterman jacket shoots with my students. This allows me to practice my studio lighting and gives them photos to use for whatever they need. I try to have original ideas over the years and give each new wave of letterman jacket recipients an original photoshoot. And, to test my own skills.
Photographers: White savage paper backdrop. I painted 2 - 4x8 foam core boards white and black. I positioned my makeshift white v-flats camera right with the speed light into the foam core boards to make a large white modifier. TT600 Speed light.
This year, I focused on trying to create all different lighting setups for each of the 5 students. It definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone without having to be under the pressure of performing for pay. I do notice a pattern of short side lighting that I will work on changing in the future. But for now. I think these shots were decent.
Photographers: I used my 47” octa as an overhead light and placed a white reflector on a step stool to help lift the shadow under the chin just a pinch. 1 - TT600 godox flash.
The only part about this massive photoshoot that I need to work on is TIME! Shooting 5 students took all week. And, about 2 hours per person to get 10 photos. The culling, editing, and retouching took me some time as well. But, I do like the results.
Photographers: 47” Octa Camera left. 45x45 Aputure with grid as hair light camera left and behind the subject. I used a variable ND filter to control more of the ambient light in the room.
2025 Letterman jacket photoshoot should be a good one as well. I have an idea that will hopefully turn out good!
All the best,
C
Side note: I use Lightroom, Photoshop, and a Wacom tablet to edit and retouch my photos.
