Senior Boys
This year I had more boy senior photoshoots than I did girls. Which is a pretty cool stat to know.
I want to focus on a few things that happened during the photoshoots that made them run smoothly!
I found all of my 2024 seniors interesting and unique. They come from great families and have bright futures.
Keep The Graduation Gown Open!
This was one of my best photos of 2024. One of the biggest suggestions that I have when doing senior/grad shoots is to keep the gown open. The gown is very unflattering to ALL body types. It puts everyone in a box and I don’t want my seniors to be in a box. I want as much style and personality as I can get when it comes to photoshoots.
**Photographer Idea - use the gown as a prop and not part of the wardrobe! Hang it, swing it, drape it, open it, hang it off one shoulder, hang it off both shoulders, gown by itself with the details.
Details
Details will matter as you grow up. You may not want to wear the same things as you did when you were in high school. You may not remember what your style was or exactly what you wore on a daily basis. So, in essence, I am a historian. I capture who you are in this moment in time. Whether good or bad. In my personal case, I would be super embarrassed of who I was in High School. But, my 2024 seniors had some STYLE!
I want to capture all the details! Rings, watches, bracelets, tassels, necklaces, nails, stoles, cords, achievements. The list is never ending. I am here for all of it! I think these things make you…. You.
Outfits
When it comes to boys and clothes…. They kind of don’t mix…
One of the things that I offer all of my graduates is a style guide. I would have to ask if they used it. I kind of put blind faith in the senior boys to come “put together.”
In the guide, I cover styling, accessories, haircuts, nails, props, sports, hobbies, etc to better prepare the parents and graduate for what is about to happen.
I would encourage you to make the photoshoot yours! Look the best you can! Plan accordingly for changes from outfit to outfit. And, where you want to see this outfit vs. another. Remember, it is in the details!
I usually work the outfits up instead of down. I, personally, think it is easier to continue to add to the outfit than it is to take if off. I want the images to look clean and not busy. I save the cap photos for the end, to save both the boys and girls hair that is usually styled.

I will cover other topics in all my senior photoshoot posts. I hope that these tips help you whether you are in front or behind the camera. My best advice is PREPARE! Crush your next senior/grad shoot!
All the best,
- C
